Second-year Avalanche center T.J. Hensick didn't make the opening-night roster despite an impressive training camp, but his return to the team could prove to be more valuable than anticipated now that center Joe Sakic is having problems with a sore back.

The Avalanche isn't certain at this point if Sakic will be available when the Avalanche opens a three-game road trip Wednesday against Vancouver at General Motors Place but can take some solace in the addition of Hensick, 22, who is mature beyond his years and contributes plenty of speed.

Since being recalled Nov. 6 from the Lake Erie Monsters in the American Hockey League, Hensick has collected an assist in each of two games while providing energy and improved defensive play after suiting up for 31 games as a rookie a year ago.

"He's a mature kid," Avalanche coach Tony Granato said. "He isn't a big kid (generously listed at 5-feet-10, 185 pounds), but he's smart positionally, gives us a lot of speed, and his play away from the puck has been very good."

Hensick has seen action on a number of lines but seems to have found some chemistry with veteran left wing Darcy Tucker. Both of Hensick's assists have come on goals by Tucker.

"It's definitely a good feeling when you get the chance to come back up and play in the NHL," Hensick said. "It's something you dream about all the time. Now I have to prove that I can play here on a daily basis."

AVALANCHE 1, PREDATORS 0: Goalie Peter Budaj stopped 26 shots for his sixth career shuout and Darcy Tucker scored a second-period goal Saturday night at the Pepsi Center as the Avalanche ended its losing streak at five games. The Avalanche killed seven penalties and has thwarted 17 of 19 opponents' power plays over the past seven games.
