It's true Lemieux is a Shark
It's true Lemieux is a Shark
SAN JOSE The Sharks wanted to make one thing clear about reports that 43-year-old left wing Claude Lemieux the legendary NHL super-pest had been signed to a contract:

It was the Worcester Sharks not the parent team in San Jose doing the signing.

"This is not a Jeremy Roenick thing," San Jose Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said Tuesday, a reference to the decision 14 months ago to sign Roenick, who was then on the verge of retirement. "Jeremy was a whole different animal."

Though the Worcester Sharks of the American Hockey League are an affiliate of the NHL club, Wilson played down his role in the process and said any talk of Lemieux playing for San Jose is "so premature."

"We will evaluate at a much later time," Wilson said. "People are jumping to all these conclusions and they're way off base."

In fact, Wilson said, Lemieux first must clear waivers before he even reports to Worcester now that a standard AHL contract has been signed.

Lemieux played in the NHL from 1985 to 2003 and won four Stanley Cups on three teams the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche. His violent hit from behind on Kris Draper in the 2006 playoffs helped create the bitter rivalry between the Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings.

Some reports Monday said the San Jose Sharks signed Lemieux, prompting calls to Wilson from all over North America.

Wilson said Lemieux called him awhile ago, wondering about options to play. The Sharks GM said he mentioned the China Sharks, and Lemieux went there for two games.

"Then he was looking to AHL opportunities," Wilson said. "They're looking to win games in Worcester, so why not?"

Lemieux already has at least one Worcester connection. One of the assistant coaches when Lemieux was in New Jersey was John Cunniff, the father of Worcester assistant David Cunniff.

Another look

Tonight's game against the Chicago Blackhawks is a rematch of the Nov. 16 contest in Chicago won by the Sharks 6-5.

Players from both teams say they can use that experience to their benefit tonight.

"We've got to stay out of the penalty box," Chicago right wing Patrick Sharp said, reflecting the fact San Jose scored four power play goals that night.

"We got into a run-and-gun type game," Sharks right wing Devin Setoguchi said. "You don't want to do that with a team that's got a lot of offense."

The game also will be Brian Campbell's first in San Jose since leaving as a free agent on July 1.

Each member of the Sharks top line Patrick Marleau, Joe Thornton and Setoguchi carries a five-game point streak into tonight's game.
